Rivian announced in December plans to build their second manufacturing facility in Georgia. Less the one month later and we are now learning the fledgling automaker has some ambitious plans for the site.
According to a ‘Rezoning Conceptual Site Plan Exhibit’ submitted on January 3, 2022 to Walton/Morgan County, Rivian is hoping to build approximately 19.6 million square feet of floor area across 13 different buildings.
The largest building, described only as ‘Building 2’ on the site plan, will be approximately 4.33 million square feet in size, and have around 150 loading doors.
To give some perspective on just how big that is, Giga Texas is about 4.5 million square feet.
Not only will the facility be massive in size, it will also feature much more than just manufacturing.
There will be a R&D center, training facility event center, delivery center, on-site test track and adventure trail, and 144 charging stations for outbound vehicles.
Even though the automaker is still ramping up production of their first two vehicles, having delivered just over 1,000 R1T and R1S trucks and SUVs, they are wasting no time to expand.
Construction of the Georgia factory is expected to start this summer. The site will be built in phases and take many years to complete, but Rivian is hoping to begin production in 2024.
At its peak, the automaker says the facility will have an annual production capacity of 400,000 vehicles.
