Laguna Seca EV lap record now belongs to Randy Pobst and the Unplugged Performance Tesla Model S Plaid

The Tesla Model S Plaid has only been out for less than two months, but has already proven itself as the fastest production car ever made. Last month it set a new world record quarter-mile time of 9.08 seconds.

Now it can also holds the record of fastest electric vehicle (EV) at Laguna Seca after Randy Pobst claimed that title at the famous track this past weekend.

While competing at the TeslaCorsa 16 event on Sunday, the modified Model S Plaid from Unplugged Performance went around the 2.238 mile (3.602 km) track in just 1:28.213. That marks the first time an EV has officially completed a lap around Laguna Seca in under 1:30.

The record time came within inches of the fastest time set by any production car at Laguna Seca. That record belongs to a McLaren Senna, also driven by Pobst, which was able to complete a lap in 1:27.6.

You might say Laguna Seca is Pobst’s favourite track. He also holds the record for the two fastest lap times in a production car, a McLaren Senna and Porsche 991 GT2 RS.

This isn’t the first time a Model S Plaid has completed some hot laps at Laguna Seca. In May, before the official release of the vehicle, two different versions of the refresh Model S were spotted at the track and based on unofficial time estimates, what was suspected to be a Plaid+ variant completed a lap in about 1:29.

The next fastest EV around Laguna Seca is the Lucid Air. Last year a tri-motor prototype completed a lap in 1:31.3.
