Visitors to a number of recreational facilities in Barrie, Ontario will soon be able to plug in and charge their vehicles while they play.
With assistance from Natural Resources Canada (NRC), Barrie city councillors have preemptively approved a 10-year agreement with Alectra Energy Services (AES). The partnership will see 10 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 10 recreational facilities throughout the city.
A report to council said AES will operate and maintain the level 2 chargers, allowing them recover their investment into the project through charging session fees.
“Alectra recovers their investment cost through the revenue generated from user fees and leverages the grant funding to offset capital expenditures,” according to the staff report. “The City benefits from the partnership by enhancing service at our large recreation facilities and promotes electric vehicle use within the community.” (via Barrie 360)
The agreement will receive final approval at a council meeting on June 28, 2021. Once approved, construction will begin with the hope to have them complete by September 30.
EV charging stations will be installed at the following facilities:
- Holly Community Centre (2 charge stations)
- East Bayfield Community Centre (2 charge stations)
- Allandale Recreation Centre (2 charge stations)
- Sadlon Arena (4 charge stations)
