Tesla has decided to proactively recall some Model 3 and Model Y vehicles for a brake caliper bolt inspection.
In an email sent to some owners this morning, the automaker says the issue impacts Model 3 vehicles built between December 2018 and March 2021 and Model Y vehicles built between January 2020 and January 2021. The email notes that it only impacts “certain” vehicles between these dates, and not all.
UPDATE:Â The recall has now been officially posted by the NHTSA (21V387000). Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-21-33-002. It impacts a total of 5,974 vehicles built between the dates described above. Transport Canada has not yet posted the official recall.
According to the email, the brake caliper bolts on some of these vehicles “may not have been secured to the correct specifications.” As a result, the bolts may loosen and “in very rare circumstances” loosen enough so that the caliper comes in contact with the wheel.
If it does, there may be a loud rubbing noise and the movement of the wheel may be impacted, potentially cause tire pressure loss.
Tesla says they are not aware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the issue.
The automaker advises recipients of the email to schedule a service appointment using the mobile app. The required work will be completed free of charge, and can be performed at your home by mobile service.
