Tesla drops price of Model S/X Infotainment Upgrade in US, no change in Canada [Update]

If your Tesla Model S or Model X was built before March 2018, the automaker has just reduced the price of the Infotainment Upgrade in the US. The price for the upgrade in Canada has remained the same.

UPDATE: Tesla has now dropped the price of the upgrade in Canada more than 40%, from $3,510 CAD to $2,000 CAD.

Originally priced at $2,500 USD, the MCU1 to MCU2 upgrade program first started in the US early last year. With the newer computer, owners gain access to a number of newer features. These include safety features like Dashcam and Sentry Mode.

The upgrade also added entertainment features like games in the Tesla Arcade as well as streaming services like Netflix and YouTube. It unfortunately would also remove AM, FM, and Sirius XM radio services, but owners can now pay an additional $500 to retain FM and Sirius XM.

More importantly though the upgrade also gives owners a new embedded Multi-Media-Card (eMMC). The memory cards in pre-2018 vehicles were prone to failure due to the constant rewrites they were subjected to. When they did fail, the touchscreens would go blank, leaving drivers without access to features like the backup camera.

The issue was enough for the NHTSA to ask Tesla this week for a recall of 158,000 Model S/X vehicles built before 2018.

Owners can order the upgrade by scheduling a service appointment using the mobile app.

Unfortunately Canadians still have to pay the full $3,510 CAD plus taxes to receive the upgrade. We’ll keep you updated if this changes.

You can find more details on the upgrade on Tesla’s website.
