Tesla China sets new sales record in December

With the first deliveries of the Model Y expected to begin this month, Tesla sales figures in China should skyrocket very soon. Even before then, the automaker set a new monthly sales record in the month of December.

According to figures released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla sold 23,804 units in December, beating the record set the month prior.

In November Tesla sold 21,604 Model 3’s, nearly doubling October sales of 12,143. The huge increase in sales corresponded to an equally large increase in production at Giga Shanghai in the second half of the year.

For all of 2020, Tesla sold an impressive 138,058 Model 3’s, where just one year ago workers were putting the final touches on the factory.

The second year of operation for Giga Shanghai is shaping up to be a big one. The factory is targeting to produce 550,000 vehicles this year. About half (300,000) will consist of Model 3’s, while the remaining 250,000 units will be Model Y’s, which began mass production at the factory last month.

Tesla is also now producing vehicles for Europe out of Giga Shanghai. The first shipment of Model 3’s was sent to Belgium in November.
