The made-in-China Tesla Model Y is another step closer as it has now received sales approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
According to an update to the MIIT website early Monday, the Model Y from Giga Shanghai is now included in the list of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) recommended by MIIT, and is exempted from the purchase tax (10%) in the country.

With the approval, Tesla is now legally allowed to sell the electric SUV in China after applying for it earlier this month.
The approval does not permit Tesla to begin manufacturing just yet, as a production permit is still needed. If Tesla is able to secure that soon, that could mean deliveries could begin this year. The Design Studio still lists production as beginning “in 2021 at the earliest.”
