A utility-scale battery storage site in Belgium has started taking delivery of Tesla Megapack 2 units. The 400 MWh project will help balance the grid and accelerate the rollout of renewable energy.
Massive Tesla Megapack 2s are finally arriving at the Langerlo battery pack in Genk, Eastern Belgium. Reports indicate that most of the 106 XL batteries are now ready for deployment.
The energy storage project can deliver up to 100 MW of electricity to the grid. With a total capacity of 400 MWh, the site can operate at full capacity for four hours before the batteries are depleted.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2027. The Megapacks will store electricity when supply exceeds demand and release it when demand rises. Thus, the grid remains stable.
The Langerlo project is a win for the environment. The energy storage site was a former coal-fired power plant. It will connect to the grid via existing connections. The old power plant, the last of its kind in Belgium, burned its last coal in March 2016.
Storm is the developer behind the project. It is investing about 330 million euros in Langerlo and another site in Ruien.
Tesla’s battery business is booming, according to an update CEO Elon Musk shared at the last company earnings call. Deployment reached 13.7 GWh in Q3 2026, with revenue of $2.88 billion.
Tesla began producing the Megapack 3 in Texas in August. The American company expects demand to surge as data centers worldwide deploy batteries to maintain high uptime.
