Tesla wants to bring a Supercharger to the far northern reaches of Canada. The company has proposed to build a station in Inuvik, which if approved, would be the first Supercharger in the Northwest Territories..
A town document shared by Marco on X shows Tesla has approached the municipality about putting two to four charging stalls on town land. The project could also include solar panels and battery storage.
Town staff have identified the property with the Inuvik Gateway Welcome Sign at 25 Carn Street as a possible home for the chargers. That location isn’t settled, however, and other town properties that receive winter maintenance could still be considered.
Tesla is proposing to pay $200 a month in rent under an agreement that would initially last 10 years after the station opens. It would then renew automatically in five-year increments unless terminated.
What makes this proposal noteworthy is not just that it would the first in the Northwest Territories, but also how far Inuvik sits from Tesla’s existing Canadian Supercharger network. Currently Canada’s northernmost Supercharger, and closest to Inuvik, is located in Grand Prairie, Alberta, roughly 2,718 kilometres away, or about 34 hours by car.
There are still plenty of details to work through. The document doesn’t specify charging speeds, a construction timeline or when drivers might be able to plug in. It also leaves open whether solar and storage would ultimately be installed.
The proposal still needs town approval and a licence agreement before it can move forward. If it does however, Inuvik would mark a significant step north for Tesla’s Canadian Supercharger network.
