Construction is underway on Belgium’s largest battery energy storage project, with 640 Tesla Megapack 3 units.
Known as Green Turtle, the project is being developed by Netherlands-based GIGA Storage on the site of a former zinc factory in Dilsen-Stokkem, Belgium. Once complete, it will offer 700MW of power and 2.8GWh of storage capacity, making it one of the largest battery installations in Europe.
In addition to supplying the Megapack 3 units, Tesla will oversee engineering and construction and provide long-term maintenance.
Green Turtle will connect directly to Belgium’s high-voltage grid. When renewable energy production exceeds demand, the Megapacks will store electricity generated by sources such as wind and solar. That energy can then be returned to the grid during periods of higher consumption, while also supporting grid balancing and congestion management.
At peak output, GIGA Storage estimates the facility could supply electricity equivalent to the daily consumption of approximately 385,000 households.
The site is expected to come online by the end of March 2028.
This isn’t the only large Tesla Megapack 3 project underway in Belgium. Another facility by Storm will use 180 Megapack 3 units to provide nearly 700MWh of storage capacity. Testing and commissioning expected to wrap up by the end of 2027. Together, the two projects will deploy 820 Megapack 3 units and provide approximately 3.5GWh of energy storage.
