A 2016 Tesla Model S is about to reach a remarkable milestone, with the now discontinued flagship sedan scheduled to cross one million kilometres. To celebate, Tesla Kelowna will be hosting a party this weekend.
The event will be held on Saturday, September 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Tesla’s Kelowna location at 3425 Circuit Road. Tesla is inviting owners and EV fans to watch the odometer roll over while enjoying games, pizza and ice cream. Demo drives will also be available for attendees who want to experience Tesla’s current vehicle lineup.
Attendance is free, although Tesla is asking visitors to RSVP through its Canadian events website.
Tesla says the Model S has achieved the milestone with its original motors and suspension, an impressive accomplishment for a vehicle that has spent a decade covering unusually long distances.
A Decade and One Million Kilometres
Although Tesla’s event listing does not identify the car or its owner, it is likely the Model S owned by Darryl Kolewaski. Named Wattson, the car celebrated its 10th birthday in June, when it had already accumulated more than 835,000 kilometres.
With it now approaching 1 million km, Wattson has averaged approximately 100,000 km annually, 8,333 km per month or 274 km every day. Its one-million-kilometre journey is equivalent to circling the Earth about 25 times, completing roughly 1.3 round trips to the Moon, or travelling between Sydney and London approximately 13 times.
How Wattson Compares to the World’s Highest-Mileage Tesla
While one million km puts Wattson among the world’s highest-mileage Teslas, it is not the overall record holder, and in fact, not even close. That distinction belongs to German owner Hansjörg von Gemmingen-Hornberg’s Model S P85, which by now has likely crossed 3 million km.
However, that car reached its total using four battery packs and at least 13 drive units. Wattson on the other hands has completed its first million km with its original motors and suspension.
