Tesla appears to be preparing for an international expansion of its Robotaxi service, with new job postings pointing to potential expansion into Canada and South America.
According to job postings on Tesla’s Careers website, the company is seeking AI Safety Operators in Ottawa, Ontario, as well as Colombia and Chile. While Tesla has not officially announced Robotaxi launches in any of those markets, or any market beyond the United States for that matter, the responsibilities listed in the postings suggest autonomous ride-hailing service in these countries is around the corner.
The Canadian posting says that in addition to collecting data by driving engineering vehicles equipped with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, the new positions include “[overseeing] daily operations of ride-hailing services including driver/rider management.” (h/t: @Scotty4Scott)
That wording is different than when Tesla was looking for ADAS test operators before FSD expanded into Canada.
The Ottawa posting also requires employees to ride-share while conducting camera and audio data collection, operate recording equipment, analyze collected data, document issues, and provide feedback to improve the company’s testing process.
The Ottawa posting is the only AI Safety Operator position currently posted for Canada.
Tesla operates its Robotaxi service in six U.S. cities, including Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, while supervised ride-hailing is available in the Bay Area. Based on the wording of the job posting, the service in Canada would look much like it does in California, pending the necessary regulatory approvals to operate without a safety driver behind the wheel. Knowing the Canadian legislative process, that may still take a while.
As of this week, Tesla has completed over 380,000 miles (611,550 km) of unsupervised driving since launching the Robotaxi service in Austin last June.
