Stellantis is making a push into AI-powered driving technology, announcing a new partnership with UK-based startup Wayve that could bring hands-free driving to millions of vehicles across North America by 2028.
The agreement will see Wayve’s “AI Driver” integrated into Stellantis’ STLA AutoDrive platform, enabling what the companies describe as supervised Level 2++ automated driving on both highways and city streets. The system is designed to support hands-free, door-to-door driving while still requiring driver supervision.
Unlike many traditional self-driving systems that rely heavily on high-definition maps and expensive specialized hardware, Wayve says its software uses an end-to-end AI model trained on real-world driving data, similar to Tesla’s approach.
According to the company, the system can adapt across different vehicles, sensors, and geographies without needing extensive remapping efforts.
That flexibility appears to be a key selling point for Stellantis, which operates 14 brands globally, including Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Peugeot, and Fiat. Wayve CEO Alex Kendall said the startup’s AI is specifically designed to scale across a wide range of vehicle types and driving environments.
Wayve says it has already demonstrated rapid integration with Stellantis vehicles, bringing a working prototype online in less than two months. Kendall also revealed engineers had the system driving within just a few weeks of development starting.
The companies are initially targeting North America for the launch in 2028, although they have not confirmed which specific models or brands will receive the technology first.
While the initial rollout will remain supervised, the companies say the platform is being built with a pathway toward more advanced autonomous driving capabilities in the future.
