Blue Origin has achieved a major milestone with its heavy-lift New Glenn rocket, but the mission ultimately fell short of a complete success after an issue with payload deployment.
The launch, which took place early Sunday morning from Cape Canaveral, marked the first time Blue Origin successfully reused a New Glenn booster—an important step toward lowering launch costs and competing with SpaceX. The reusable first stage returned to Earth roughly 10 minutes after liftoff, landing on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

However, the success of the booster recovery was overshadowed by problems with the rocket’s upper stage. The mission was carrying a communications satellite for AST SpaceMobile, but the spacecraft was placed into what Blue Origin described as an “off-nominal orbit.”
“We have confirmed payload separation. AST SpaceMobile has confirmed the satellite has powered on,” the company said in a statement shared on X. “We are currently assessing and will update when we have more detailed information.”
AST SpaceMobile later confirmed the satellite, known as BlueBird 7, had been inserted into an orbit “lower than planned,” making it unsuitable for its intended operations. As a result, the satellite will need to be deorbited, though the company noted the loss is expected to be covered by insurance.

The issue appears to be linked to the rocket’s upper stage, which was expected to perform a second burn roughly an hour after liftoff to reach the correct orbit. It remains unclear whether that burn failed to occur or did not perform as expected.
Despite the setback, the mission still represents a significant technical achievement for Blue Origin. This was just the third flight of New Glenn, a rocket that has been in development for more than a decade and is seen as the company’s answer to SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy.
The stakes are high for New Glenn. Blue Origin has secured contracts with NASA for future lunar missions and plans to support both its own and Amazon’s ambitions in satellite communications. The company is also targeting a higher launch cadence, with CEO Dave Limp previously stating a goal of up to a dozen flights per year.
For AST SpaceMobile, the failed orbital insertion represents a temporary setback in its plans to build a space-based cellular broadband network. The company aims to launch dozens of satellites in 2026 as it competes with growing efforts from both SpaceX and Amazon in the direct-to-device connectivity space.
