The Tesla Model Y has earned the title of best-selling vehicle in California for the fourth year in a row.

According to the final sales figures from the California New Car Dealers Association, the Model Y outsold its nearest competitor, the Toyota Rav 4, by almost 45,000 units.

The Model 3 also ranked in the top five, placing fourth in total sales in 2025.

Place Vehicle Make and Model Total Units Sold in 2025
1. Tesla Model Y 110,120
2. Toyota Rav 4 65,604
3. Toyota Camry 62,324
4. Tesla Model 3 53,989
5. Honda Civic 53,085

Overall, Toyota took the crown as California’s best-selling brand, with Tesla finishing third on the podium.

Place Vehicle Brand Total Units Sold in 2025
1. Toyota 322,068
2. Honda 194,343
3. Tesla 179,656
4. Ford 138,266
5. Chevrolet 114,125

Taken in a vacuum, Tesla continues to lead the way in individual sales and has strong overall brand sales as well. However, when you look back, you start to see a downward trend for the automaker. 2025 sales numbers mark the third straight year of decline in Tesla’s overall sales.

Year Total Units Sold by Tesla
2023 238,589
2024 202,865
2025 179,656

A few factors are contributing to the decline in EV sales for Tesla, including the end of the $7,500 federal tax credit for EVs by the Trump Administration and increased competition from Korean and North American automakers in the EV niche. Least to say, 2026 will be a pivotal year for Tesla on the west coast.
