Tesla shows off the impressive workings inside Giga Shanghai

While the rest of Tesla’s factories are shut down due to COVID-19, the Gigafactory in Shanghai is back hard at work after they were shut down earlier this year.

Tesla has now released a video giving us a glimpse into what actually goes inside, and it’s impressive.

The video shows us what looks to be hundreds of robots working in unison as the production line pumps out made-in-China Model 3’s, and all the quality controls and testing done before the vehicle can be handed over to their lucky new owners.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said previously that bringing a car from prototype to production is the hardest thing he’s ever done. After seeing this video, it allows to somehwat understand the immense amount of work and long hours it must have taken to get to this point.

It’s relatively easy to make a prototype but extremely difficult to mass manufacture a vehicle reliably at scale. Even for rocket science, it’s probably a factor of 10 harder to design a manufacturing system for a rocket than to design the rocket. For cars it’s maybe 100 times harder to design the manufacturing system than the car itself.

What makes it even more impressive is that the location of Giga Shanghai was a big field of mud just over a year ago. Tesla was able to build the factory in a record 9 months, and begin manufacturing the first Model 3’s ahead of schedule.

It turns out that getting it built quickly was the best thing that could happen for Tesla, given that it is currently the only factory producing cars for Tesla at the moment.
