Tesla to expand Japan’s charging network to more than 1,000 Superchargers by 2027

Tesla is preparing for a major expansion of its charging footprint in Japan, planning to build out more than 1,000 Supercharger stalls across the country by 2027.

Tesla currently operates 695 Supercharger stalls at 138 stations nationwide. The company is expected to reach its 700th stall before the end of the year, with a further acceleration of deployment over the next two years. By 2027, Tesla aims to have between 180 and 200 Supercharger locations, extending coverage far beyond Japan’s major urban hubs and popular travel corridors, according to a report from Nikkei Asia.

As we have recently reported, there are more than 75,000 Tesla Supercharger stalls globally, the majority of which are using the company’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), which has become the de facto standard for new EVs in Canada and the United States.

However, Japan’s EV charging landscape is still largely dominated by CHAdeMO fast chargers, where more than 12,600 units were operational as of March. While Tesla owners can use those chargers with an adapter, the Supercharger network provides a superior experience with faster speeds and seamless vehicle integration.

Tesla isn’t the only player pushing toward NACS compatibility in Japan. Charging providers, including ABB and homegrown supplier PowerX, are preparing to deploy Tesla-compatible equipment in the near future. There are also an estimated 350 Tesla-standard chargers already operated by third parties.

Meanwhile, major automakers—from Mazda to Sony Honda Mobility and the last holdout Stellantis—have announced plans to support Tesla’s charging standard, with some models arriving as soon as 2027.

Despite the compatibility challenges and a historically limited Tesla charging presence, Japanese consumers have been embracing the brand at an impressive pace. Sales from January to November reached nearly 10,100 units—double last year’s results and the first time Tesla has surpassed 10,000 sales in Japan.

That puts Tesla in the number one position among standard-size EVs with about 30% market share so far in 2025. Kei EVs still dominate overall electric sales in the country, accounting for about 40%.
