Tesla Supercharger in Kamloops under construction [British Columbia]

A second Tesla Supercharger station in Kamloops is under construction, but it is not in the location we expected it to be.

A 12-stall V3 Supercharger is being built by the former ToysRUs building in the Sahali business area at 1380 Summit Drive.

According to a photo of the site taken by one of our readers, all of the ground work has been completed and it looks like crews are waiting for the Supercharger equipment to arrive. Even the Tesla parking signs are already up.

Last year we learned there was going to be a second Supercharger station added in Kamloops. The Tk’emlúps te Secwe̓pemc First Nation announced it was going to be built at the Petro-Canada gas station at 301 Southern Yellowhead Hwy, making it what would have been the first Supercharger on First Nations land in Canada.

We are not sure if this location is still going ahead. We have reached out to Tk’emlúps te Secwe̓pemc but have not received a reply at the time of publication. We will update this article when we get a response.

According to Tesla, the second Kamloops Supercharger is scheduled to open in Q4 2022, but based on the construction it looks like this station will open in Q3.

UPDATE: This article was updated to reflect that it will actually be a 12-stall Supercharger, not 10 stalls as originally reported.

Tesla Loses Majority Share of U.S. Fast-Charging Market as Rivals Accelerate Expansion

Tesla is still building more fast chargers than any other company in the United States, but for the first time in the latest industry figures, it no longer controls the majority of the market. New data from Paren shows Tesla’s share of US DC fast-charging ports dropped to 49.3% at the end of September, down from 54.3% a year earlier. What’s interesting is that Tesla hasn’t stopped expanding. In fact, it added roughly 5,700 ports over the past year. The difference is that competing networks installed more than twice that number during the same period. Tesla remains the clear leader in new installations, adding 1,287 Supercharger stalls in the third quarter alone. That number increases to 1,411 when including its Supercharger for Business program. However, companies like Ionna, Walmart, and Electrify America are expanding their networks, giving EV drivers more alternatives to Tesla’s Superchargers. And those alternatives are getting better. More than a third of new non-Tesla charging ports installed during Q3 were rated for 400kW or higher, compared to just 10% a year ago. Tesla is also pushing ahead with its next-generation V4 cabinets, which can deliver up to 500kW. Another notable change is the size of charging locations. Tesla’s newest Superchargers averaged 13.1 stalls, with 11 new sites featuring at least 24 stalls. The expansion comes as U.S. EV drivers are using public chargers more frequently than ever. Charging sessions jumped 26% year-over-year to 50.4 million during Q3, yet overall charger utilization remained nearly unchanged. For Tesla, losing its majority market share isn’t necessarily a sign of the company losing its edge. Rather, it shows how quickly the broader charging industry is expanding around a network that has dominated the market for years.
