Waymo Unveils Sixth-Generation Robotaxi With Geely Zeekr EV

Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary, has introduced its sixth-generation self-driving technology. This latest iteration, integrated into Geely Zeekr electric vehicles for the first time, is focused on reducing hardware costs while expanding the vehicle’s autonomous capabilities.

Waymo’s sixth-generation system builds on the capabilities of its predecessor by reducing the number of sensors and cameras, but at the same time delivering superior performance. Waymo has reduced the number of cameras from 29 all the way down to 13, while also reducing the number of lidar sensors from five to four.

The sixth generation hardware has already been tested for thousands of miles on public roads, as well as millions of miles in simulation.

With the reduction in hardware, Waymo explains their sixth generation technology enhances the vehicle’s ability to navigate a broader range of weather conditions, and still has all of the same safety-critical redundancies found in the previous generation.

The hardware changes extend beyond cameras and lidar sensors, with Waymo partnering with Geely Zeekr to create a robotaxi that is more comfortable for passengers than their Jaguar I-Pace vehicles. The Zeekr’s design includes a spacious interior with a low step and high ceiling, providing more legroom and making the vehicle more accessible.

The new robotaxi’s design is also intended to be more adaptable to various rider needs, ensuring that it can serve a wider demographic.

Waymo’s expansion efforts are not just limited to adding new vehicles to its fleet. The company is also expanding its service area, having recently opened up its ride-hailing service to all users in San Francisco. Waymo is also expanding in Los Angeles.
