Tesla’s referral program returns in the US with cash rewards and discounts

Tesla has brought back its popular referral program, giving buyers and owners the chance to now earn cash rewards and discounts. This new version of the program is currently only available in the United States, but we expect it to also launch in Canada soon.

Tesla’s last version of the referral program ended on April 30, 2023. That program allowed owners to earn credits when referring someone to purchase a Tesla product, and those credits could then be redeemed for certain items, like accessories, apparel, and even software upgrades in the Referral Shop.

When the program was cancelled, CEO Elon Musk said it would return “in a few months.” Depending on your definition of “few,” the new program launched as scheduled on Saturday, but only in the US.

With the new program, when someone buys a Tesla with your referral link they get US$1,000 off their purchase. As the referrer, the existing owner gets a US$500 reward, which can then be used like cash towards Supercharging, software upgrades, merchandise, and even be put towards the purchase of a new Tesla, or service bills for your existing Tesla.

According to the new terms of the program, existing owners can earn 10 referral awards of US$500, for a total of US$5,000 per calendar year.

Existing owners can also earn US$1,000 off when buying a new Tesla.

If you don’t see the referral program in your mobile app, make sure you have updated to the latest version, v4.36.1, which was released on the iOS App Store on Friday.

Will Tesla’s Referral Program Also Return to Canada?

Despite the revamped program’s return first being announced by the Tesla North America account on X, it is currently only available in the US. However, since previous referral programs have also been available in Canada, we fully expect it to also launch north of the border.

The question is when. The previous version of the program launched in November 2022, and also only in the US. It wasn’t until May 2023 when the Canadian version launched. So going on that timeline, we might have to wait another six months before Canadian Tesla owners and buyers can take part in the referral program, but hopefully it will be a lot sooner than that.
