The Tesla Model Y and the Model 3 have been named the “most American-made” vehicles in the United States by Cars.com.
Previously, the Tesla Model 3 held the title, but the Tesla Model Y overtook its cousin vehicle for the title in 2022.
The “most American-made” car is part of the publication’s annual study of vehicles and their impact on the United States economy.
The study takes into account:
- Manufacturing location of the vehicle
- Manufacturing location of parts
- American jobs created by its production
One thing to note is that components from Canada are also included. However, the United States assembly of engines and transmissions get a heavier weighting to compensate.
Tesla dominated the top ten, with four of the top six vehicles in the rankings.
Here are the top ten made-in-America vehicles, as per Cars.com:
- Tesla Model Y
- Tesla Model 3
- Lincoln Corsair
- Honda Passport
- Tesla Model X
- Tesla Model S
- Jeep Cherokee
- Honda Ridgeline
- Honda Odyssey
- Honda Pilot
Cars.com editor-in-chief Jenni Newman had this to say on Tesla’s dominance:
Tesla is the only major automaker to claim 100% domestic production for all cars it sells in the U.S., well above the industry’s roughly 52% average.
Interestingly, American brands such as Ford, Chevrolet and General Motors were not in the top ten, despite claims from media and politicians that would make you think otherwise.
