Tesla Model Y delivery timelines in some European countries have been extended by as much as five months, leading to speculation about an impending refresh of the electric SUV, known as Project Juniper.
For example, the Design Studio in the Netherlands shows delivery dates for the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant are now stretching into May 2025. This is a full five months longer than the delivery windows for other Model Y trims, which are still showing delivery dates of December 2024 or January 2025. (h/t: @arnthorjon)
The same delivery windows are shown in France and Italy, while in Germany, home to Giga Berlin, delivery dates remain as December/January.
While this is not confirmation of an impending announcement for a new and updated Model Y, this is a pretty good sign that something is around the corner, as Tesla has history of pushing back delivery dates ahead of major product updates.
For example, in late 2020, Tesla halted deliveries of the Model S and Model X a few months before unveiling refreshed versions in early 2021. Similarly, the Model 3 saw significant delays in some regions prior to the announcement of its refreshed version, dubbed “Project Highland,” which launched in 2023.
The reason for these delays were because of required production shutdowns and retooling at Tesla’s factories to produce the new designs.
As for the Model Y Juniper refresh, several prototypes have been spotted on public roads over the last few months, including in Europe. Giga Shanghai is reported to have already started trial production of the new Model Y, with rumours speculating Tesla will do a simultaneous launch of the new Model Y from Giga Shanghai, and its other factories in the US and in Germany.
Tesla has maintained its characteristic silence on the matter, offering no official explanation for the extended delivery windows. However, with the recent sightings, and Tesla’s own announcement earlier this year that a new version of the Model Y wasn’t launching in 2024, all signs are pointing to the new Model Y launching in early 2025.
