Tesla Giga Shanghai increased deliveries in China by 87.5% YoY in August. The manufacturer’s share of the Chinese battery electric vehicle market was 13.18 percent last month, up from 7.46 percent in July.
Tesla sold 84,159 Chinese-made vehicles in August. According to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), 19,465 of them were exported to overseas markets. This also means that Tesla delivered 64,694 vehicles to China. This amount means the company increased deliveries to the domestic market by 87.51 percent compared to August last year. This is also 105.88 percent more than in July.
Tesla produces Model 3 and Model Y at its Gigafactory in Shanghai. According to the CPCA, 65,316 Model Ys and 18,843 Model 3s were sold in August. The factory is the company’s export hub and supplies vehicles to countries in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as Europe. In the first half of the quarter, Giga Shanghai is focused on exports, and in the second half of the quarter, the focus transitions to domestic deliveries. September is expected to be even stronger than August.
Tesla delivered an impressive 390,222 vehicles to China between January and August, according to CnEVPost. This is 62.23 percent more than a year earlier. During the same period, Giga Shanghai exported 234,761 vehicles, up 47.28 percent from last year.
Thanks to strong sales in August, Tesla has a strong position in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market. Last month, 716,000 vehicles were registered in this segment. Tesla accounted for 9.04 percent of NEV retail sales in China. This is a notable increase from 4.90 percent in July. Retail sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in China were 491,000 in August, while retail sales of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) were 226,000 units. Tesla’s share of the BEV market in China was 13.18 percent in August, up from 7.46 percent in July.
