Tesla gains market share in Sweden despite the union strike that has lasted almost 12 months. Model Y remains an elusive top seller in September, strengthening the company’s overall market position in 2024.
Tesla’s Swedish sales figures, updated for September, show that the company has gained market share in the country in 2024. Tesla’s triumph shows that the country’s residents largely support the company and choose its cars as the best on the market, despite the local union’s ongoing strike.
Tesla sold 16,478 cars in Sweden in the first nine months of the year, up 1% from the same period in 2023, according to Mobility Sweden. This means the company’s overall market share in 2024 is 8.5%, up from 7.8% a year earlier. Despite the overall decline in the EV market in the country, Tesla maintains a strong position with a 23.3% market share.
In September, the company significantly strengthened its position. With 4,793 registrations, Tesla became the best-selling brand in the country, overtaking Volvo. Model Y was probably the best-selling car in the country with 4,126 sales. Sales figures for cars of all makers are not yet available, however it is clear that other manufacturers will have a hard time matching such high sales figures. In the EV market, Model Y has no worthy competitors. Its closest competitor is Model 3 with 643 registrations, which is almost 7 times less than its younger sibling. In third place is Volvo XC40 with 609 units.
Tesla is at the center of a dispute in Sweden over its refusal to sign a collective agreement and thereby allow the IF Metall union to negotiate on behalf of its employees. The union called a strike in late October 2023 and has since been supported by other workers unaffiliated with Tesla. Interviews of local news outlets and Tesla Club Sweden with the company’s employees in the country have shown that their participation in the strike is very low.
The employees have said that Tesla is offering them conditions as good or better than those demanded by the union, therefore, they do not want to join the strike. IF Metall claims this is not true, but refuses to provide any data to support their claim.
