Tesla has quietly removed the Cybertruck Range Extender from the online configurator. As the name implies, the Range Extender was supposed to bring the Cybertruck closer to its originally advertised range, but had faced several delays.
When the Cybertruck was first unveiled in 2019, it was supposed to come with a 500-mile (804km) range. Five years later when it was finally released, the range figure came in at around 325 miles (523km), disappointing many fans.
However, Tesla had a solution to almost get it to 500 miles – the Range Extender – an optional tool-box-sized battery that took up roughly one-third of the truck bed, but pushed the driving range to as much as 470+ miles (756+km) for the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant.
The Range Extender wasn’t going to be cheap however, with an estimated price of US$16,000/C$22,000, adding to the already high price of the truck. It also wasn’t immediately available, originally intended to launch in late 2024. However, that date was later pushed that back to early 2025, and then delayed for a third time to mid-2025. Additionally, Tesla also lowered the expected boost in range down to “445+ miles” (716km+).
Now as we approach mid-2025, the Range Extender has disappeared from the online configurator entirely, in both Canada and the United States. It is unclear at this time if the Range Extender will return. It is still listed on the Cybertruck specs page, now with only 440+ miles or 710+km, but no longer appears on the order page.

If it does return, Tesla may be redesigning the Range Extender, either to add more range, or to change the design so it doesn’t take up as much space in the bed of the truck, or possibly both. One of the main complaints of the Range Extender was its awkward design that shortened the truck bed considerably, reducing its utility. Fans thought it should have been a flat design that instead took up the entire length of the bed so you were still able to maintain the utility of the truck, like in the mockup below.
