SpaceX Introduces Starlink Family Plan & Implements New Fee to Combat Reselling

SpaceX has launched a new Starlink Family Plan, offering existing customers the opportunity to extend satellite internet service to additional family members at a discounted rate.

The promotion is only available to select users in the United States, and by invitation only. If you are lucky enough to be one of those subscribers to get the invite, you will be able to add up to two family members to your account.

These family members can purchase the Standard Kits for US$199, a substantial reduction from the usual US$499 price, and enjoy a monthly subscription rate of US$100, down from the standard US$120 fee, according to the details of the special offer on the company’s website.

In addition to the new Family Plan, SpaceX has also introduced measures to curb unauthorized reselling of its Starlink hardware. The company has implemented an “outside region fee” that targets customers who activate a Starlink kit outside the region where it was originally purchased.

According to the support page for the new fee, it applies in the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceana. The fee ranges from $200 to $300, depending on the location and type of kit, and is designed to deter scalpers from buying hardware in regions with lower prices and reselling it in more expensive areas.

To avoid this fee, SpaceX recommends purchasing Starlink kits directly from the company or through authorized retailers within the customer’s region.
