Rivian teases R2 ahead of unveil, announces $100 refundable deposits

Rivian is gearing up to debut its next model, the R2 during an official unveiling on March 7, 2024. Ahead of that event, Rivian has given us a teaser of the more compact and affordable version of the R1T and R1S, and it looks like it will maintain many of the design cues from its larger siblings.

Rivian had already confirmed the March 7 launch event, but now we know it will be livestreamed at 10 a.m. PST, thanks to a new R2 page that was launched today on Rivian’s website. From the teaser image included on the site, we can see the R2 is expected to follow in the design footsteps of the R1T and R1S, featuring the distinctive rounded headlights and a full-width LED light bar that has become a signature of the brand.

Along with the teaser, Rivian also announced that reservation for the R2 will open during the reveal event, at which time customers will be able to put their name on the list with a fully refundable deposit of US$100.

Pricing for the R2 is anticipated to range from US$40,000 to US$60,000, making it a more accessible option for those looking to enter the EV market, positioning the R2 as Rivian’s answer to the Tesla Model Y.

The R2will be be built at Rivian’s new factory in Georgia, which is currently under construction. As such it also stands to gain access to the full $7,500 EV tax credit in the US, potentially reducing the starting price to an even more attractive point.

The R2 is expected to be the first Rivian vehicle built with an integrated North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge port, allowing owners to access the Tesla Supercharger network without an adapter.
