Rivian sees sharp drop in Q2 production ahead of 2026 model launch, receives $1B from Volkswagen

Rivian has released its second-quarter 2025 production and delivery results on Wednesday, revealing a substantial drop in vehicle output. The automaker attributed the drop to preparations for the launch of its 2026 model year lineup. Rivian also announced today it has received $1 billion from Volkswagen as part of its previously announced joint venture.

According to Rivian, it produced just 5,979 vehicles in Q2—barely half of what Wall Street had anticipated at around 11,000 units. On the delivery side, the automaker handed over 10,661 units to new owners during the three-month period, down nearly 23% year-over-year, but up 23% from the 8,640 deliveries in Q1 2025.

Despite the underwhelming figures, Rivian reaffirmed its 2025 delivery guidance, maintaining a target of between 40,000 and 46,000 units, which has already been adjusted down from earlier projections of 46,000 to 51,000 vehicles.

The production slowdown is attributed to retooling and preparation for refreshed versions of the R1S and R1T, as well as the upcoming debut of the more affordable R2 in 2026. The R2 is seen as critical to Rivian’s future growth and profitability as competition intensifies in the EV market.

Rivian also confirmed it has received the next $1 billion installment from Volkswagen as part of their $5.8 billion technology joint venture. The investment follows Rivian achieving its second consecutive quarter of gross profit in Q1 2025, a milestone reached thanks to cost-cutting efforts and a simplified vehicle architecture in its updated R1 lineup.

Volkswagen’s investment is a significant show of confidence in the EV maker’s software and electrical architecture, which will be integrated into all of Volkswagen’s future EVs.

Rivian will report its full Q2 2025 financial results on August 5 after market close, followed by a live webcast at 5:00 p.m. ET to discuss its earnings and future outlook.
