Rivian reintroduces ‘All-Electric Upgrade Offer,’ with some changes

Rivian has brought back its “All-Electric Upgrade Offer,” designed to incentivize consumers to make the leap from traditional gas-powered vehicles to an electric truck or SUV, although this time the offer is structured differently than before.

Previously, Rivian’s upgrade incentive in early 2024 offered tiered discounts for customers trading in older gas vehicles, with the discounts ranging from C$1,500/US$1,000, all the way up to C$7,500/US$5,000 depending on which trim of the R1T or R1S you were buying.

With just two months left to go in 2024, Rivian has reintroduced this incentive program, but instead of a tiered discount, the automaker is now offering a flat C$4,100 discount in Canada or US$3,000 discount in the US.

In order to qualify, buyers have to be able to verify ownership of a gas or hybrid vehicle through a registration document or insurance paperwork. Another important change in this updated offer is that you no longer need to trade-in your old car.

Despite the easier eligibility requirements, the new promotion does have some restrictions. The discount applies only to new inventory vehicles in Rivian’s R1 Shop, meaning customers cannot get the discount on demo, pre-owned, or custom-order vehicles. Additionally, Rivian’s base Dual Standard models are excluded from the discount, narrowing the options slightly.

To qualify, buyers must place their orders by November 30, with delivery required by December 31.

While this new offer is more relaxed than the previous one, it is also missing out on one incentive. Previously one year of free charging at Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) sites was also included, although RAN locations are not yet available in Canada.

Rivian is bringing back this offer to boost sales with just two months left to go in the year. In its Q3 2024 report, Rivian reported a lower-than-expected delivery figure, and lowered its production target for the year by 10,000 units. As it turns out, that reduction was due to a communication error with one of its suppliers.
