Rivian is significantly expanding its manufacturing ambitions, announcing plans to increase the initial production capacity of its upcoming Georgia plant by 50%, bringing it to 300,000 vehicles per year.
The update, revealed as part of the company’s latest earnings report, comes as the electric vehicle maker prepares for the next phase of growth centered around its upcoming R2 platform. The Georgia facility, located near Stanton Springs, is expected to play a key role in scaling production of Rivian’s more affordable, mass-market vehicles.
Originally planned with a lower starting capacity, Rivian says the increase is designed to improve cost efficiency from day one. By building more vehicles at launch, the automaker aims to better absorb fixed costs across higher volumes—an important factor as they work toward profitability.
According to the update, the plant is still on track to begin vehicle production in late 2028, with the expanded capacity applying to the first phase of development. Rivian says the site will also allow for additional growth in later phases, giving it room to scale even further if demand for its vehicles continues to rise.
Supporting the project is a revised loan agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy. Rivian now expects to access up to $4.5 billion in financing for the Georgia facility, down from earlier projections of approximately $6.6 billion. Despite the lower total, the company says the updated structure offers more efficient capital deployment. Rivian anticipates drawing its first funds from the loan as early as 2027, earlier than previously expected.
The Georgia plant will complement Rivian’s existing manufacturing operations in Normal, Illinois, where the company currently produces its R1T, R1S, commercial delivery vans.
As of last month, Rivian has also begun early production of the R2 at its Illinois facility, with deliveries to employees already underway and customer deliveries expected to begin in a few weeks.
