Gigafactory Nevada hits 1 million battery packs produced

As seen in a recent image on the r/TeslaMotors subreddit, Gigafactory Nevada produced its 1,000,000th battery pack. Considering the challenges around Gigafactory Nevada, this is a momentous occasion for both Tesla and Panasonic.

The special occasion was commemorated by the Giga Nevada team, with the battery being signed by several employees. The factory produced its first battery pack in January 2017. Although the facility does not make vehicles, the factory is integral to the success of Tesla’s expansion plans. Giga Nevada produces the powertrains and 2170 battery cells for the Model 3 and Model Y.

Giga Nevada was a gamble and one that Tesla certainly won. When Tesla announced the factory, many saw it as ludicrous. There were many reservations around the future success of EV’s to the mass market. Batteries were expensive, and gambling on a capital-intensive facility like Giga Nevada, had many wondering what Tesla was thinking back in 2014.

However, the gamble worked, and with in-house battery supplies, Tesla continues to push out Model 3’s and Model Y’s at a record pace. With the popularity of both the model 3 and Model Y, the 2,000,000th battery will come off the line shortly.
