First gas station in the world to convert to all electric from gasoline

The first gas station in the world to convert from gasoline to all-electric charging opened this week in Takoma Park, Maryland. RS Automotives has been open since 1958, with the most recent owner, Depeswar Doley, taking over the gas station in 1997.

Part of the reason for the switch to all-electric charging, according to Doley, was how gas companies structure contracts and limit the use of suppliers, extends contracts when sales volumes aren’t met, and limiting maintenance support.

What ultimately led him to make the switch though was some prodding by his 17 year old daughter.

“My daughter, who is 17, she is the one who convinced me after I told her that I was going to talk to the [Electric Vehicle Institute] guys,” Doley said.

When asked if he’s concernred this switch will limit his income potential, Doley doesn’t appear too worried.

“You notice there are not too many electric vehicles on the road. So it’s not something that I expect to become rich overnight or something like that, but it’s a good cause [and] good for the environment.”

Let’s hope the time comes sooner rather than later when we see gas stations converting to electric charging stations.
