Despite earlier promises to deliver their first electric vehicle in 2022, Ferrari Chief Executive Louis Camilleri now says that date has been pushed back to at least 2025.
Speaking at Ferrari’s Maranello factory earlier this week, Reuters reports that Camilleri says that the cause of the delay is current battery technology, which he believes will require more development to get it to a point where Ferrari would be comfortable releasing an electric vehicle.
Ferrari’s electric car would fall into their Grand Touring (GT) lineup of vehicles, and would not be part of their performance lineup.
Camilleri also said there are still “significant issues” when it comes to autonomy and the speed or electric vehicle recharging. Combined with the lack of sufficient battery technology in their eyes, Ferrari will not release an electric vehicle until “post-2025”, and definitely “not in the short term”.
