CleanBC EV Charger Rebate program now includes Tesla’s Wall Connector

Good news for Tesla owners in British Columbia who have recently installed, or are going to be installing soon a Tesla Wall Connector to charge their vehicles at home.

The CleanBC Charger Rebate program was launched last week, and to the surprise of many, the program excluded Tesla chargers as the requirements, amongst other things, stated that to be eligible it had to be a J1772 plug.

Today Tesla in Canada received the following email from the Ministry of Energy, Mines & Petroleum Resources after sending in an inquiry last week about why Tesla chargers were excluded.

Thank you for your email. The CleanBC EV Charger Rebate program has been updated to include Tesla Wall Connectors on the eligibility list for the single-family home rebate. The Tesla Wall Connector is not eligible for rebates at workplaces and multi-unit residential buildings as the program is intended to support charging infrastructure in these building types that can be accessed by all electric vehicle makes and models sold in North America. Tesla vehicles come with a SAE J1772 adapter which can be used to access J1772 stations. Market uptake of home and workplace EV charging infrastructure will be assessed on a regular basis to ensure that the infrastructure being enabled by the Province supports the broadest range of EVs currently in the market and into the future.

Thanks,
CEV Team

The BC Hydro Rebate site has not been updated with this new information, or about what chargers specifically will qualify. Also, our original inquiry about the program also asked about a simple 240V plug being installed to charge with the included Mobile Connector with Model 3’s, but the response above did not indicate that will be included as well.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

UPDATE #1: BC Hydro has now officially announced on Twitter that Tesla chargers will be included in the program. The picture they used to announce this shows the Mobile Connector plugged into a 240v outlet. Hopefully installing a 240v outlet will be eligible for the rebate as well.
