As the buildings at Giga Texas begin to take shape, the agreement that brought the massive factory to Austin, Texas has been recognized as the deal of the year.
The Business Facilities Magazine 2020 Deal of the Year Gold Award was given to the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce. In announcing the winner, Business Facilities Editor in Chief Jack Rogers said it was “one of the most coveted projects of the year.”
That was reiterated by Gary Farmer, Chair of Opportunity Austin, who said the factory is a game changer for the region (via KVUE).
“The Chamber’s Opportunity Austin team worked tirelessly with Tesla and our government and community partners to make this deal a reality. Giga Texas is a true gamechanger for our region and is much deserving of this national attention.”
The factory has seen tremendous progress since construction began last year, even before it was officially announced. According to documents posted to the City of Austin website, Tesla is targeting to have the factory “substantially complete” by May 1, 2021.
When finished, the facility will cover over 4,000,000 square feet and create over 5,000 jobs over the first four years. Along with manufacturing the Model 3 and Y, it will also produce the Cybertruck and Tesla Semi, which are expected to ship in late 2021.
