The Tesla Model Y was Australia’s second best-selling vehicle in June. The Model Y led an EV surge, with electric drivetrains accounting for 8.8 per cent of June sales in the country. When you add in plug-in hybrid vehicles, that number jumps to 16.6 per cent.
According to data from the Federated Chamber of Automotive Industries, the Model Y sold 5,560 vehicles in June to just edge out the Ford Ranger. Only the Toyota Hi-Lux ute sold more vehicles, with 6,145 vehicles sold in June. The top five vehicles for overall sales were: (via The Driven)

- Tesla Model Y – 5,560 sales
- Ford Ranger – 5,334 sales
- MG ZS – 3,756 sales
- Toyota Rav4 – 2,858 sales
In terms of EV sales, only three models were in the quadruple digits, with the Model Y leading the way, and the BYD Atto 3 just edging out the Model 3 for second and third place respectively. The top ten electric models in terms of sales in June were:
- Tesla Model Y – 5,560 sales
- BYD Atto 3 – 1,532 sales
- Tesla Model 3 – 1,458 sales
- MG ZS EV – 387 sales
- Polestar 2 – 251 sales
- Volvo XC40 recharge – 156 sales
- Kia EV6 – 154 sales
- Volvo C40 recharge – 151 sales
- Kia e-Niro – 125 sales
- Mercedes-Benz EQA – 121 sales
The winter in Australia is set to have two big new entrants, which could add to EV sales. The BYD Dolphin and MG4 are hitting Australia with their under $40,000 price tag.
