Tesla Model Y was the best-selling luxury SUV, gas or electric, in China in October

Tesla China posted another strong month of sales last month, recording over 54,000 wholesale vehicle sales in October.

Even though more than 40,000 of those were destined for export to overseas markets, Tesla still sold enough Model Ys to make it the best-selling luxury SUV in China last month, even when taking into account gas-powered SUVs.

According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), a total of 13,303 Model Ys were sold in October. That figure was a 16.6% increase compared to the same month last year.

It was enough to outpace the likes of the Mercedes GLC and BMW X3, which sold 12,620 and 11,243 units in second and third place respectively.

The only other electric SUV to make the top 10 was the NIO ES6, which came in 10th with 2,528 sales.

Tesla still has a way to go if they want the Model Y to the best-selling luxury SUV for the year. It currently sits 22,556 units behind the BMW X3 is year-to-date sales.

Those chances will be increased with the launch of deliveries of the Model Y Performance from Giga Shanghai, which are expected to begin soon.
