Tesla Model Y starts 2022 holding on to title of top selling premium electric SUV in China

Tesla has started the new year right where it left off in December, as the Model Y was the best selling premium electric SUV in the country in January.

Data from the China Automotive Technology Research Center (CATARC) reveals a total of 16,496 Model Ys were registered last month, easily outpacing the Lixiang ONE in second place with 12,426 registrations.

For these figures, a premium electric SUV is one considered to be above ¥300,000.

For the automaker as a whole last month, data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) yesterday showed Tesla sold 59,845 vehicles in January.

More than 40,000 of those were exported to other markets, while the remaining units being sold domestically in China.

Tesla only started selling the Model Y in China in January 2021, registering 1,641 sales in its first month on the market.

Increasing sales in the months that followed helped it claim the title of best selling premium SUV in China in 2021, regardless of powertrain.
