Tesla driver in BC ticketed after allegedly falling asleep behind the wheel while on Autopilot

A Tesla driver in British Columbia received a ticket for driving without due care, and attention after a video surfaced of a woman sleeping behind the wheel.

The incident took place Thursday on the northbound section on the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows bridge during rush hour.

In the video, which went viral on Instagram, the Tesla appears to be operating with Autopilot.

The driver dozes off and then snaps back to attention before dozing off again.

“I looked out the passenger window and noticed what looked like somebody just completely asleep behind the wheel of the Tesla. From what I saw they were out like a light, but then there was a couple moments where it looked like they almost woke up, then went back to sleep,” barneee750 told Global News.

North Vancouver RCMP charged the individual and a spokesperson noted that drivers are still required to be paying attention, even if operating a vehicle with Autopilot enabled.

The driver of the Tesla was issued a $368 fine associated with the ticket. In addition, the ticket includes a six-point penalty associated with their driver’s licence. The six-point penalty carries its own ICBC premium penalty of $432.
