Tesla introduces Powerwall 3 Expansion Units in the US

Tesla has introduced its new Powerwall 3 expansion units in the US, providing a flexible and cost-effective solution for increasing home energy storage capacity.

Tesla’s Powerwall 3, which officially launched in early 2024, brought a major power capacity upgrade compared to its predecessor. While the energy capacity remains constant at 13.5 kWh, Powerwall 3 offers a power capacity of 11.5 kW, peaking at 30 kW, representing a 130% increase in on-grid power capacity compared to the previous generation Powerwall 2.

With the Powerwall 3 Expansion Unit, Tesla has taken this a step further. Customers can now add 13.5 kWh to their existing setup, stacking multiple Expansion Units with one main Powerwall 3 to increase energy storage. The key difference between an Expansion Unit and the Powerwall 3 is that the Expansion Unit does not include an inverter.

Each main Powerwall 3 can support up to three expansion units, making it possible to add up to 40.5 kWh of capacity per installation.

One of the most significant benefits of these Expansion Units is its reduced installation time. According to Tesla, traditional two-unit Powerwall installations take about 45 minutes, while the new setup can be completed in just 22 minutes, yield not only significant time savings, but also cost savings.

Tesla did not reveal information on pricing, however during a presentation earlier this year, the company said the Expansion Units would be about US$1,000 cheaper than a Powerwall 3. Currently, a Powerwall 3 is listed on Tesla’s website at a price of around $17,000, before incentives.

Currently the Powerwall 3 is available in multiple markets outside the US, including Canada, Germany, and the UK, however, the expansion units are currently only available in the US. Presumably the Expansion Units will also make their way to these markets.

Tesla’s Powerwall network has reached significant milestones, with over 750,000 installations worldwide.
