King County adds 120 Tesla Model Ys for cleaner mobility

King County in Washington State is making its public transportation system less carbon emitting by purchasing 120 Tesla Model Ys. As The Center Square reports, the electric SUVs will be used in a vanpool fleet charging $49 per month.

Residents of King County in Washington can now enjoy more zero-tailpipe-emission transport. The local authority is spending $6.43 million on 120 Tesla Model Ys, with an additional $60,000 going towards acquiring chargers, accessories, and licensing.

The Tesla Model Ys will join King County’s Vanpool Program, which commuters share for a flat monthly fee of $49. The county is budgeting $5.5 million to expand its electric fleet in 2025, which currently constitutes 10 percent of its vehicles.

The county noted the Tesla Model Y is not more expensive than ICE minivans. The car also aligns with its e-mobility goals, including cutting emissions by 45 percent in 2025 compared to 2017 while meeting federal funding requirements.

Governmental departments all over the US have realized the strategic value offered by Tesla’s cars. The Anaheim Police deployed six Tesla Model Ys as patrol vehicles earlier this year, while the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts bought 22 Tesla Model 3s late last year. Another police department is considering outfitting Tesla Model Ys as patrol cruisers.
