Waymo is preparing to expand its robotaxi operations to Miami, setting the stage for a major rollout in the Sunshine State by 2026.
Waymo’s journey in Miami began in 2019 when the company first tested its autonomous vehicles on the city’s streets. The focus was on improving performance under adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rain, which is common in Florida.
After refining its technology and learning from these initial trials, Waymo is ready to reintroduce its electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles to Miami’s streets in 2025.
As it does when it expands to a new city, the cars will initially operate with human safety drivers, allowing the system to adapt to the city’s environment. Waymo says their goal is to offer paid rides via the Waymo One app starting in 2026.
The expansion to Miami follows the rollout of robotaxi fleets in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, where the company provides over 150,000 autonomous trips per week. The company also has plans to expand to additional markets like Atlanta and Austin, in collaboration with Uber.
To manage its fleet, Waymo also announced a new partnership with Moove, a mobility-focused company specializing in fleet management and infrastructure support. Moove will oversee Waymo vehicle maintenance, charging, and other operational needs in both Phoenix and Miami.
