Rivian’s Second Generation R1S and R1T Are Now Delivered Without Physical Key Fobs

Rivian is no longer including a physical key fob with new deliveries of their second-generation R1S and R1T models, following a similar move by Tesla with the Model S and Model X back in 2022.

Rivian’s decision to eliminate the standard key fob in favour of a KeyCard and mobile app has not been well received by their customer base, who feel that a physical key fob is essential, especially given Rivian’s reputation for off-road capabilities where cell service might be unreliable.

The discontent among Rivian owners became widely known through social media platforms like Reddit and forums dedicated to the brand. One R1S owner shared messages with their Rivian Guide who confirmed the key fob is no longer included.

Adding to the frustration, even if they want one, owners are unable to purchase one separately, with the Guide only saying it would be available in the Rivian Gear Shop “at a later date.”

Despite issues with the existing keyfob like poor battery life and proximity range reported by some users, many still prefer the reliability of a physical key fob. These complaints however suggest another reason why Rivian may have stopped including them as standard in new deliveries.

This could be a temporary move and Rivian could be working towards the introduction of a next-generation key fob that addresses some of the current concerns.
