NHTSA opens fourth probe into Fisker Ocean SUV over inadvertent emergency braking

FiskerĀ is having no moment of respite yet as the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opens yet another investigation into itsĀ Ocean SUV. This is the fourth safety probe launched by the NHTSA into the Ocean, and this time it is based on multiple reports of ā€œinadvertent Automatic Emergency Braking.ā€

Customers have logged eight complaints of this particular issueĀ accordingĀ to the NHTSAā€™s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI).Ā Three of them involved injuries.

The complaints claimed their Ocean EV abruptly activated the Automatic Emergency Braking system when there were no obstacles on the road. The ODIā€™s description of the reported incidents includes, ā€œThe braking applications range from momentary, partial application resulting in rapid loss of speed to full application, which brings the vehicle to a complete stop in the travel lane.ā€

Previous and active probes involveĀ door malfunction, the carĀ rolling away unexpectedly, andĀ braking failures.

Apart from safety probes, Fisker is on the verge of bankruptcy. AfterĀ warning it might have to file a Chapter 11 bankruptcy application, the EV startup has actuallyĀ applied for reorganization for its business arm in Austria, the rough equivalent of a bankruptcy proceeding in the US. Contract manufacturerĀ Magna Steyr does not expect to produce more cars for Fisker.

It has also had to cope with low sales andĀ losing 40,000 reservations for the Ocean SUVĀ afterĀ popular YouTuber MKBHD slammed the car in his review.
