Ford delays release of Mach-E, but claims it can now charge 30% quicker than expected

As Ford continues to fine-tune the Mach-E, their first ever electric vehicle (EV), the automaker claims new testing shows it can charge quicker than they expected.

When charging for 10 minutes at an Electrify America DC fast charging station, Ford now says the extended-range battery rear-wheel drive Mach-E will gain an average of 61 miles (98km) of range. Previously Ford estimated the same charging session would see the Mach-E gain 47 miles (75km).

The extended range battery all-wheel-drive version will add an estimated 52 miles (83km) of range in the same 10 minute charging session.

Both configurations are estimated to be able to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 45 minutes using the Electrify America DC Fast charger.

But it’s not all good news for Ford, as they also announced a delay in the release of the Mach-E. You can probably guess the reason for the delay – COVID-19.

Ford’s factories have been shut down since March, and only re-opened yesterday, May 18. Ford’s head of product development and purchasing, Hua Thai-Tang, said the closure would result in a delay in the release of the Mach-E, as well as the automaker’s redesigned F-150 and Bronco SUV.

Given our inability to work in the assembly plants during the shelter-in-place restrictions, it will have an impact to program timing, in terms of the launches. But we expect the launch delays to be commensurate with the duration of the shutdown period.
