Uber Japan and Hinomaru Kotsu have joined forces to bring about a major shift to the Japanese taxi and hire industry. The companies announced on Monday their plans to deploy 100 Tesla Model Ys to Uber Premium’s service by the end of 2024.
According to a press release the Model Ys will be deployed in 23 wards in Tokyo and will be part of Uber Premium’s exclusive fleet. The introduction of 30 Model Y vehicles is set to kick off in November at three of Hinomaru Kotsu’s offices located in Setagaya, Edogawa, and Adachi wards. As the initiative gains momentum, affiliated companies of Hinomaru Motors’ wireless group will also participate, culminating in a total of 100 Model Y vehicles on the roads by the end of 2024.
To ensure a seamless user experience, Uber Japan will create a dedicated menu on its app’s car model selection screen, allowing customers to specifically request a ride in a Tesla Model Y. To support the fleet, Hinomaru Kotsu will install charging infrastructure, starting in November, at their offices in Adachi and Setagaya wards.
The partnership marks a significant step forward in promoting sustainable and eco-friendly transportation options in Tokyo. By introducing 100 electric vehicles (EVs) to the taxi and hire industry, they are setting a precedent for other companies to follow suit and contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of urban transportation.
