Mercedes-Benz to Pour Billions into Modernizing Electric Vehicle Production Facilities

Mercedes-Benz is set to invest billions of dollars in modernizing its plants in China, Germany, and Hungary in the coming years. This move is in preparation for the automaker’s shift towards electric vehicles and its goal of reducing emissions.

The European Union is looking to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger car by half over their lifespan by 2030, and Mercedes is seeking to end the sale of fossil fuel cars to meet this goal. To achieve this, Mercedes will invest a “three-digit million” sum in each of its plants, with a focus on curbing energy and water consumption and reducing the dependence of painting systems on fossil fuels, according to a report by Automobilwoche.

In Germany, the automaker has EV plants in Sindelfingen, Bremen, and Rastatt, and work will soon begin on the Rastatt plant. The company plans to introduce the first model of the compact vehicle platform MMA from 2024.

In addition to its European plants, Mercedes plans to expand its US plant in Tuscaloosa and is considering government subsidies. The automaker is also open to adapting to changes in regulations as they vary from country to country.
