Tesla wins third consecutive home charging award from J.D. Power

J.D. Power has published their latest U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study, and Tesla once again holds a significant lead over the competition. This is the third year J.D. Power has published this study, and the third year Tesla has come out on top.

The study, conducted in collaboration with PlugShare, measured plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) owners’ level of satisfaction with their Level 2 permanently mounted home charging solutions. Between December 2022 and February 2023 a total of 13,860 owners of 2017-2023 model year BEVs and PHEVs were surveyed on eight different factors, including:

  • fairness of retail price;
  • cord length;
  • size of charger;
  • ease of winding/storing cable;
  • cost of charging; charging speed;
  • ease of use;
  • and reliability

When it was all said and done Tesla ranked the highest with a score of 790, down slightly from their 2022 score of 797, but still far ahead of the segment average of 740. The second ranked home charger brand was GRIZZL-E with a score of 757, while Emporia (754) ranked third.

At the bottom of the rankings were Ford (699), Electrify America (697) and Chevrolet (683).

According to the study being able to schedule a charge time significantly increases satisfaction. Part of what contributed to Tesla’s success was the ability to schedule a charge through the vehicle’s mobile app, as that was rated higher (739) than scheduling through the charger mobile app (709). Interestingly, 49% of owners said they don’t schedule their charging sessions.
