The Cybertruck is still nearly 2 years away, but that hasn’t stopped people from designing concept aftermarket accessories for the electric truck.
One such design is a new Cyber Hitch, a non intrusive (flush mount), full motion 5th Wheel Hitch. The big difference with this hitch and other designs for the Cybertruck is this one has already been tested for 20 years.
The designer Glenn Burns, a retired aerospace designer and machinist who worked tools for the space shuttle, hopes Tesla and Elon Musk will see his design and try to incorporate its unique features into the design of the Cybertruck.
The specs are certainly impressive. It has a 6″ diameter coupler with a 2″ King Pin, and features a towing capacity of 16,000 lbs, with future considerations of up to 30,000 lbs.
The Cyber Hitch design, utilizes a “gooseneck” type configuration, but does not implement a ball.
With the amount of hi-tech software in Tesla vehicles, Burns is hoping the Cyber Hitch will be implemented with smart sensors that the driver can access on the Cybertruck’s display. He has already created some mockups, showing the tongue weight, if the trailer is locked in position, and other important information to know before and during towing.
The flush-mount design, which allows you to easily remove the hitch when not in use, is one part of the design that may make it not suitable for the Cybertruck. To be able to do this, the Cybertruck would need some kind of sub-structure underneath the Cybervault (bed). Since the Cybertruck has an exoskeleton design, it doesn’t have a traditional frame to attach the Cyber Hitch to.
But the final design of the Cybertruck is still a long way away, so maybe something like this will be incorporated when the final design rolls out.
