A company that lets you subscribe to EVs has been busy acquiring Tesla cars at a clip of 200 units per week, as reported by Electrek. Autonomy is about to place an order for 23,000 EVs mixing up cars from Rivian, Ford, Lucid, etc.
Autonomy was founded by Scott Painter, who also started TrueCar. In January, Autonomy reported it had 100 Mode 3 cars but revealed it wanted to run a 10,000-strong fleet before the year ran out. However, it has reduced its goal to 6,000 vehicles, and that is not unconnected to supply limitations by Tesla.
Subscribers pay from $490 per month, with a $4,900 down payment and a minimum of three months subscription.
The company has about 1,000 Teslas in operation. Painter said Autonomy has around 1,000 people waiting to rent an EV at any given time. They can get their cars within six days, thanks to the 200 to 300 cars it buys from Tesla weekly.
Hertz created a buzz when it announced a deal to purchase 100,000 EVs from Tesla. It has since teamed up with Uber to give some of the cars to freelance drivers on the ride-hailing platform. Hertz also got a contract for 65,000 Polestar EVs. However, Autonomy isn’t as picky as it will buy cars from other EV companies. It will accept EVs from the likes of GM, Cadillac, Ford, Polestar, and Canoo, apart from the ones mentioned already.
